After 32 years on the block, one of Revelstoke's long-established and much-loved outdoor gear and apparel stores is closing its doors this spring.

Elmer Rorstad, who's owned and operated Free Spirit Sports & Leisure (FSS) on First Street West since 1992, announced his retirement on Tuesday, March 25, which is also marking the end of the business itself.

In a statement to Black Press Media, FSS said its closing date slated for Monday, April 21, marks the end of an era, "as Free Spirit has remained one of the few long-standing anchor retail stores of Revelstoke."

Rorstad launched the store three decades ago selling athletic gear, bikes, skateboards, snowboards, general sporting goods, hiking and camping equipment, and even hunting and fishing supplies. Big-name brands such as Burton, North Face, Volcom and Mountain Hardwear have continued to be supplied since 1992.

According to FSS, it made a name for itself as a go-to shopping and social hub for many locals, also supporting "hundreds of various charities, organizations and clubs." Also, when Rorstad's wife Liz entered the business in 2007, FSS got a much-needed "cosmetic update" that enhanced the store's floor, marketing focus and diversity of staff.

"Rorstad would like to express his deep thanks and appreciation to all the locals who have shopped in the store over the years, the staff whom he has had the pleasure and fun times to work with and his suppliers who he has worked alongside over the 32 years," the statement reads.

"The decision to close the store was thought about long and hard, but Rorstad feels there will only ever be one Free Spirit Sports in Revelstoke and this is the end of an era in a changing town."

A retirement sale offering 30 to 60 per cent off all items will continue until closing, giving anyone with an FSS gift card until April 21 to spend their store credit.

Black Press Media will be interviewing Rorstad later in the week when he's available.
