Penticton's Discovery House is building a better future for men facing addiction and together they are rolling out a new Chopper of Hope fundraiser.
Volunteers including members of Discovery House started assisting a team of professionals in building the custom motorcycle from the ground up in January.
Regular updates on the construction of the motorcycle and the artistry going into it will be shared on Discovery House's social media and through behind-the-scenes videos.
鈥淭he Chopper of Hope fundraiser is about more than building an amazing motorcycle, it鈥檚 about building hope, creating connections, and impacting our community,鈥 said Blaine Russell, Discovery House's executive director. 鈥淭he goal is to raise awareness of addictions and recovery and to honour our friend and former executive director, Jerome Abraham, who passed away last year when he lost his battle with cancer."
Discovery House currently has 25 beds, including six for transitionary care at it's Parker Place location, and relies on community support and fundraising to keep all of them funded.
Even with the community's support, Discovery House faces a wait-list of dozens of people seeking to undertake the recovery program.
The base of the motorcycle is a 1971 Harley Davidson rigid-frame Springer, filled with custom work on the inside but keeping its vintage style.
Once the motorcycle is completed, the winner of a raffle will be the one to take it home, with all ticket proceeds supporting the addiction recovery program at Discovery House.
Tickets are planned to be made available May 1 until Oct. 31.
The winner will be announced in November.
Discovery House is also looking for businesses and individuals to become sponsors for the fundraiser.
Anyone interested in sponsorship is asked to contact Discovery House's community engagement coordinator Dennis Sweetnam at Dennis@discoveryhouserecovery.com or 778-931-1464.
