While 麻豆精选 council has left it to the experts to design two civic monuments for the city, there was a wishlist of things to include.
Council received an update on the north entry monument and city signature sign projects at its Monday (June 17) meeting.
鈥淥ur north entry monument is intended as a key landmark to establish of arrival into our city,鈥 Stefan Johansson, parks and landscape planner told council.
As well as having a city sign and other components, it will also include a syilx/Okanagan territory welcome.
Councillor Charlie Hodge said he would like to see a famous lake resident or a bear as part of the monument.
鈥淥gopogo鈥as a First Nations history, it has a tourism history. Or a bear, we all know 麻豆精选 means bear.鈥
Coun. Gord Love added he would appreciate a welcome sign that could be seen from various modes of transportation.
鈥淲hat鈥檚 the one thing you think of when you fly into L.A. (Los Angeles)? The big Hollywood sign, that鈥檚 what you鈥檙e looking for.鈥
麻豆精选鈥檚 previous welcome sign was removed from Reid鈥檚 Corner to accommodate the widening of the intersection.
A new monument site was identified along Highway 97 between Eillison Lake and Old Vernon Road, but a previous project, put together in late 2020, was not endorsed by council of the day.
The signature sign feature is planned for high pedestrian/tourism traffic.
鈥淲e propose to provide council with an update in August鈥n the potential contextual locations within the vicinity of the downtown area and the waterfront for the signature sign,鈥 said Keith Pinkoski, planner specialist.
Council asked that the project include opportunities for tourists and residents to take photos.
鈥淲hen people return to鈥here they鈥檝e come from they can bring up that special photo of what 麻豆精选 meant to them,鈥 Pinkoski added.
