Low counts of total coliform in the water system and increased turbidity in source water have caused a Boil Water Notice to be issued for residents in the Westshore Estates Water System.
The notice, which was put in place on Friday, April 11 affects 327 properties and 519 parcel areas 15 kilometres north of Fintry. Roadside sign notices have been put in place to let residents know of the notice.
On top of low coliform counts, the increased turbidity is due to annual freshet, which is flood season streamflow from rain and melting snow.
For residents to consume tap water safely, they must bring water to a boil on a stovetop for at least one minute. After the boiled water has cooled down, it can be used for drinking, brushing teeth, and washing/preparing food. Additionally, customers in the area can consider using alternatives like bottled water.
"The Boil Water Notice will remain in effect until testing confirms water quality is within acceptable Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines," reads the Regional District of Central Okanagan's (RDCO) release.
On Thursday, April 10, the RDCO also stated sand and bags are now available in the Central Okanagan West Electoral Area for residents to pick up and use as a protective measure to mitigate potential flooding during freshet. This is especially recommended in the affected by the McDougall Creek and White Rock Lake wildfires.
"Property owners are responsible for having an emergency plan and the tools and equipment needed to protect their properties from potential flooding," stated the RDCO.
The self-serve sand and bags are available at:
- North Westside Fire Rescue, Station 102 - 7355 Westside Road North
- Wilson’s Landing Fire Department, Station 42 - 2396 Westside Road
