麻豆精选 council鈥檚 Monday (Feb. 10) meeting included a flurry of planned housing projects that could see more than 400 new residential units eventually built in the city.
The proposed developments include townhomes, rental only apartments and supportive housing in several areas of the city. The projects are at various stages, such as rezoning and development permits.
Councillor Ron Cannan voiced concern about an apartment housing project on Glenmore Drive (1210-1226). He pointed out that other properties on the street (1256-1270) are also being rezoned for apartment housing.
鈥淗ave staff considered the fact you鈥檙e gonna have basically a block now of up to six storey buildings,鈥 he asked.
Staff noted that the city is working with the developer to deliver below market housing in the area under the MF3 (multi-family) zone. City planning documents indicate buildings in that zone can be up to six storeys. However, staff said the buildings may not be built to that height.
鈥淚 have trouble supporting this because I think it is more in line with respecting the form of character in the neighbourhood,鈥 Cannan added.
Council also approved rezoning property at 964 Laurier Avenue between Ethel Street and Gordon Dr. to convert a former assisted living seniors home into a 63 space childcare centre. While noting the need for childcare, Councillors Gord Lovegrove and Mohini Singh raised questions about tracking assisted living spaces.
鈥淲e are losing one community service, which is essential, for another that is equally essential,鈥 Singh said.
Staff told council that currently assisted living spaces are not tracked, but they could be looked at for future proposals.
