麻豆精选 council has turned down a rezoning application that would have allowed a six-storey rental apartment in Glenmore.

Most of the concern was centred on the site and surrounding area handling the density of the 67-unit building on Glenmore Drive at the corner of Highland Drive North.

Councillor Charlie Hodge said it was too much and suggested the number of suite be reduced.

鈥淭here is a fine line between what we need and what鈥檚 liveable in our city.鈥

Coun. Ron Cannan also felt the density was too much for the area.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great family neighbourhood and I鈥檇 look at a townhome type of development in that area.鈥

There was also concern about a narrow laneway on the property.

While pleased to hear it would be widened by the developer, Coun. Luke Stack felt the area is restricted by the corner of Highland and Glenmore.

He also had concerns about a lack of additional parking and access for commercial vehicles.

鈥淲e have to allow for UPS drop-offs, people coming and going, and moving in and moving out,鈥 Stack added.

Coun. Loyal Wooldridge pointed out the city鈥檚 urgent need for housing and shared his colleagues鈥 concerns about the laneway.

However, he noted the development was consistent with the Official Community Plan, is on a transit-supportive corridor, and expected that any issues could be ironed out at the development permit stage.

鈥淚鈥檓 assuming the applicant will be listening to these comments to ensure they look at their plans.鈥

Council voted against giving first reading to rezone the property with Wooldridge opposed. Council also turned down an application for the property earlier this year.
