Neighbours say it鈥檚 a nuisance party house鈥攂ut the owners of a home in the Upper Mission, used for short-term rentals, claim they are being targeted.
According to City of 麻豆精选 documents, more than 50 complaints have been received regarding the operation of the short-term rental. The home at 381 Viewcrest Court was purchased by the current owners in 2021, and a business licence was obtained in 2022 and has been renewed annually.
Staff are asking council to uphold a March 1 decision by the licence inspector to cancel the short-term rental business licence.
鈥淐ity staff has committed significant resources to monitoring and addressing concerns at the subject property and on working with the business operators and complainants since the short-term rental accommodation began operating in the summer of 2021,鈥 states a report to city council.
Bylaw officers have attended the property several times, giving verbal warnings to guests, and when not able to attend in person, post-complaint investigations were conducted.
A 37-page document provided by the homeowners states the complaints include loud music and parties, more guests than allowed under city bylaws, and improper parking of vehicles. It also states that 鈥渘uisance complaints have been consistently unfounded for over two years,鈥 and that 鈥渢he majority of complaints are directed at us, the owners.鈥
Claims of 鈥減ersonal and media attacks鈥 and 鈥渘eighbours constantly monitoring our property鈥 are also stated in the document. An "excessive" RCMP response to the home last year due to a complaint was also unfounded according to the document.
The owners say the constant complaints and harassment from neighbours have left family members fearful, anxious, and often unable to sleep, worrying about potential confrontations.
City staff conducted a review of the property, in January 2025 due to the significant volume of complaints, and also noted noise, parties, parking and operational complaints, received year after year.
The owners will have an opportunity to make their case to keep the short-term rental business licence before council at its March 31 meeting.
