麻豆精选 Memorial Park Cemetery (KMPC) has initiated a project to reclaim unused Right of Interment Permits issued more than half a century ago.
These permits, commonly known as 鈥渢he rights to a plot,鈥� were sold before or in 1973 and remain initialized.
According to cemetery manager, Tracey Hillis, the objective is prudent land management.
鈥淏ecause these plots were sold 50 years ago, they often get forgotten about after so many years, or the owner has already been interred elsewhere,鈥� Hillis said. 鈥淭he initiative aims to prevent perpetual underutilization of cemetery land, ensuring sufficient space for future burials.鈥�
The reclaiming process affects permit holders or their immediate family members.
They are urged to notify KMPC via email at cemeterypermits@kelowna.ca before October 7, regarding their intent to utilize, transfer, or surrender the Right of Interment Permit.
Failure to respond will result in the cemetery reclaiming the permits.
KMPC encourages potential permit holders or their family members to reach out for verification and update of permit status and contact details.
The provincial legislation permits cemeteries to reclaim permits sold 50 or more years prior, following a prescribed notification and waiting period.
KMPC adheres to a 150-day window before reclaiming permits.
