In recognition of World Water Day on Saturday, March 22, the Peachland Watershed Protection Alliance (PWPA) is hosting an event focused on the importance of water and the growing concerns surrounding water security.
鈥淭he fragility of our water supply has never been more apparent,鈥� said Taryn Skalbania, PWPA founder. 鈥淔rom global issues like climate change to local planning decisions, access to fresh water is increasingly under threat. With the added complexity of the American economic stance, some might argue that water has now become a matter of national security.鈥�
The event will feature environmental advocate, former MLA, and Peachland resident Judi Tyabji, who will discuss how both local and international politics are affecting water security.
鈥淭he risk to our resources is real and rising, however, our opportunity to protect and enhance our water is also greater than ever, if we work together on a clear plan,鈥� Tyabji said.
As part of the event, attendees will have the opportunity to view the short film Bringing the Salmon Home. It tells the story of the Syilx Okanagan, Secw茅pemc, and Ktunaxa Nations, who are dedicated to reintroducing salmon to the upper Columbia River system as part of their cultural responsibility.
A meet-and-greet session with 麻豆精选-Peachland MLA Macklin McCall and Peachland councillors will also be part of the evening.
The event will take place at the Peachland 50+ Centre (5672 Beach Avenue). Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with activities beginning at 7 p.m. A suggested donation of $10 is welcomed.
