Recipe for success: OC鈥檚 new culinary building boosts 麻豆精选's UNESCO bid

'Magnificent building鈥elebrating the heartbeat of the region'

Okanagan College鈥檚 (OC) yet-to-be-built culinary arts building should add some flavour to 麻豆精选鈥檚 application to become Canada's first UNESCO City of Gastronomy.

Council approved a development permit for the four-storey, 60,000 square-foot building at OC鈥檚 KLO Road Campus, at its Monday (Mar. 17) meeting.

鈥淢agnificent building鈥elebrating the heartbeat of the region, which is agriculture, food, and beverage, and will help bolster our economic development as well,鈥 Coun. Loyal Wooldridge said.

The project includes 10 classrooms, food labs, offices, restaurants, and student lounges.

鈥淭his building establishes community pride,鈥 Coun. Luke Stack noted. 鈥淎 welcome addition to the campus and the city.鈥

Coun. Rick Webber said the development will add to the UNESCO application. 鈥淚t gives us real credibility. I can鈥檛 wait to see it get built.鈥

The city, OC, and Tourism 麻豆精选 were invited to apply for City of Gastronomy designation in January. 

鈥淚f approved, I think it will put us on the map鈥攂eing seen at the forefront in the Canadian culinary scene,鈥 Deputy City Manager, Derek Edstrom, told council. 

UNESCO will announce new designations later in the year.
