Bears are being spotted closer to residential areas in the Central Okanagan.

The regional district and WildSafeBC are reminding the public to be bear aware.

鈥淏ears are known for their keen sense of smell and can easily become food conditioned,鈥 said Cynthia Coates, RDCO Solid Waste Services Supervisor. 鈥淲e ask that residents take steps to not attract bears or any wildlife to their garbage. If bears do get into garbage carts, they can pose an unnecessary danger to residents.鈥

Tips from WildSafeBC include not putting garbage outside until the morning of pickup, keep barbecues clean and covered, avoid bird feeders, pick up fallen fruit immediately, and don鈥檛 leave pet food outside.

All sightings of bears, cougars, and coyotes should be reported to the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
