As wildfires continue to pose a threat across B.C. and the country, communities are pulling together to bolster their defences.
Saturday, May 4 is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day in Canada.
The day aims to equip residents with essential knowledge, ranging from evacuation procedures to assembling emergency kits.
Retired Toronto fire captain, John Martin, who now calls West 麻豆精选 home, is leading the event in his community.
He emphasizes the importance of preparedness in the face of escalating climate challenges.
鈥淲e have to be more educated about available programs and what can be done to make our communities more resilient,鈥 he stressed.
One key initiative to be discussed will be the FireSmart Program, with Bryce Stirling from West 麻豆精选 Fire Rescue in attendance to offer insights.
Martin also highlighted the significance of disseminating information to the public to mitigate panic during crises, citing last year鈥檚 McDougall Creek fire.
鈥淚t overpowered the resources that were available,鈥 he said.
Saturday鈥檚 event is set for Dupuis Park in the Casa Loma neighbourhood starting at 10 a.m.
