A young 麻豆精选 golfer is travelling to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan to compete in the US Junior Amateur Golf Championships (USJAGC) at Oakland Hills Country Club.
Okanagan Mission Secondary and Canadian Sport School grade 12 student Finley Dober competed in a qualifier in Burnaby in June, winning a four-hole playoff for the first alternate position for the USJAGC that tees off on Monday (July 22).
The 16-year-old is one of the younger players in the field of 264.
鈥淚t was my goal to compete at the US Junior Championship this season," he said. "I鈥檓 excited to compete against the best junior golfers in the world."
The tournament has been won by Tiger Woods (1991-93), Jordan Speith (2009), Scottie Scheffler (2013), Will Zalatoris (2014), and Bryan Kim (2023).
He hopes to catch a glimpse of Woods as Tiger鈥檚 son Charlie will also be competing.
鈥淚鈥檇 love to get matched up with Charlie Woods in one of the early rounds. That would be a cool experience."
The six-day tournament features a cut to 64 players after the first two rounds, with stroke play on the first two days, and match play on days three and four. The final round features the top two players.
"I鈥檓 just going to take it shot by shot, play my best and hope for a little luck on my side,鈥 Dober said.
Following the USJAGC he will compete in the Canadian Junior Championship taking place in Alberta, August 12-16.
Dober is a member of Team BC Okanagan and also competed in the RBC Qualifier, BC Junior Championships, and BC Men鈥檚 Amateur Championships. He is a member of the Gallagher鈥檚 Canyon Golf Club and the 麻豆精选 Golf & Country Club.
