Significant snowfall, highway closures and avalanche control are expected for the Revelstoke area along Highway 1 between Thursday and Saturday, according to road maintenance contractor Emcon Services.
Operations manager Kody Moncrief notified Black Press Media Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. that residents and motorists should expect snow Thursday, "leading into significant snowfall throughout Friday and into Saturday morning. We expect snowfall warnings for the highways in our area to be issued soon."
Moncrief advised that avalanche control work should also be expected Friday and Saturday, though Highway 1 closure times haven't yet been determined. Avalanche forecasters for B.C.'s Ministry of Transportation and Transit and for Parks Canada will be monitoring the situation closely to "balance highway safety and minimizing closures," Moncrief added.
"In preparation for this storm our crews are applying anti-icing material, our mechanics have our fleet in good condition and we have been arranging overtime operators for additional coverage," Moncrief said.
"During this winter we have unfortunately had plow trucks struck by other vehicles while they were working. Remember to stay back from amber lights and never pass a plow on the right."
