An electrical issue that closed a chairlift at SilverStar Mountain Resort Tuesday led to an admirable performance by all involved.
The Powder Gulch chairlift closed unexpectedly shortly after 11 a.m. Feb. 18. No one was stuck on the lift as all guests were unloaded prior to the closure.
"All Putnam Creek terrain was subsequently closed, and resort operations began transporting guests who remained at the bottom of the chairlift to the Home Run T-Bar," said Ian Jenkins, director of events, sales and marketing.
The Silverwoods chair was also closed to deploy needed staff for transportation.
Staff on snowmobiles and a snowcat were deployed and prioritized age and health to get skiers and boarders out. Snacks, hot chocolate and water were even delivered to the bottom.
Some walked out.
"We started the long hike up and eventually hitchhiked us a snowmobile ride," said Cheri Mae Grahn. "Not an ideal ski day (got two runs in) but we made the best out of it and have a good story."
Local Mitchell Downton was impressed with how everything was handled.
"Big thank you to the Powder Gulch team! Way to make the best of a tough situation," Downton said of everyone being positive amid the unforeseen inconvenience.
Everyone left safely and with no reported injuries, according to Jenkins.
"As always, our guest safety is our highest priority, and we took all precautionary measures necessary."
Powder Gulch and all other chairlifts opened as scheduled Wednesday.
"We apologize for any inconvenience and if any guests were involved, we encourage them to visit us in Guest Services," said Jenkins.
