Summerland could be getting a brand new pier by July 2024 if all goes to plan.
In September the beloved pier at Rotary Beach was dismantled after an engineering report deemed the structure unsafe with rotting pilings.
Graham Statt, Summerland鈥檚 chief administrative officer said they are currently working with the provincial government to get permission to put in the new piles in the new year.
They are requesting an extension to the environmental window to more quickly begin work to replace the pier.
If they get that permission, a basic pier could be in place by May or June with an official opening in July, said Statt.
鈥淭his timeline is entirely dependent on the province allowing us to extend that working window. If we don鈥檛 get that, expect delays on the opening of the pier,鈥 he added.
Council has earmarked $797,400 for a basic replacement of the pier coming from the $4.533 million provincial Growing Communities Fund.
In May, the municipality received approval from the provincial environment ministry to disassemble the structure.
The dismantling was delayed after an issue with a migrating bird that had settled there.
In the meantime, the Rotary Club is currently fundraising to provide enhancements to the pier. Preferred amenities identified in the survey included additional benches, a shade structure, a rope swing, a jumping board, aquatic stairs, lighting on the railing, a slide, a stepped-down platform, solar lighting on the shade structure and a floating dock and ramp.
The District has partnered with the Summerland Rotary Club for the project.
鈥淭ogether, we can enhance the basic design and make the new pier the pride of Summerland - a legacy for Summerlanders to enjoy for generations to come,鈥 said the Summerland Rotary.
The club is currently hosting its annual 50/50 tickets draw with proceeds going to the pier enhancements.
Ticket sales opened Oct. 30, and will close Dec.13, with the draw taking place on Dec. 15.
The current pot is $3,590 with winner taking half.
