Usually raking their opponents over the proverbial game coals, a Vernon rep hockey team found another use for the popular garden implement.
The Tier 2 U18 Vernon Vipers spent Sunday, Oct. 29, in Okanagan Landing鈥檚 Canadian Lakeview Estates neighbourhood (specifically Scenic Ridge) making yards FireSmart by raking up refuse for a donation.
The event helped the team raise funds that will go toward their expenses in the 2023-24 season.
All but one of the 19 players (sickness) and about 10 parents took part in the clean-up, raking out leaves and pine needles and bagging them.
鈥淚t was another successful event,鈥 said the team, who did a similar fundraiser a couple of years ago. 鈥淭he boys and parents worked hard, and did a lot of good in the neighbourhood.鈥
Helping oversee the operation was team coach Jodie Bradley, a Vernon Fire Rescue Services firefighter.
