After a year of overcoming challenges, a Ā鶹¾«Ń” man achieved his goal at BMX nationals and is hungry for more.

Draven Heitt grew up riding at the BMX track in Ā鶹¾«Ń” and aspired to be like the more experienced riders who were his role models as a young rider. Now, he is one of Canadaā€™s best and is focused on giving back to the community that helped him to grow.

Despite working full time and battling injuries from crashes, earlier this year Heitt set his sights on standing on the podium at Canadian Nationals.

Over Thanksgiving weekend Heitt accomplished his goal by placing fifth at the BMX national championship.

He said that through the ups, downs and crashes of the year, his sponsors Odd vs Even and Cyclepath Ā鶹¾«Ń” stood by him and supported his goals every step of the way.

The sponsorships allow him to focus on training without having to worry about gear and bike maintenance, which becomes a particularly daunting task in a sport like BMX where bike-damaging crashes are bound to happen.

When talking about his success, Heitt says ā€œweā€ rather than ā€œIā€ or ā€œme.ā€ He explained that while BMX riding is an individual sport, his sponsors and supporters work as a team and have played an invaluable role in his success.

Training for a solo sport is not easy, especially for someone who works on the road and regularly spends weeks away from support networks, trusted bike shops and training facilities.

Heitt brings his bike to all of his job sites and rides when possibleā€“ even if there is no BMX track nearby, in order to stay in shape.

He is now planning a few warm-weather training camps to get ready for next season, where he hopes to improve his ranking at nationals. Heitt also plans to hold training sessions for people hoping to hone or learn new BMX skills, as a way to give back to the community that has helped him get to where he is today.
