The 麻豆精选 Chiefs split their Kootenay weekend against the Nelson Leafs and Castlegar Rebels.
On Friday, Jan. 31, the Chiefs took on the Nelson Leafs for the first and only time this season but fell 6-4.
Already down 1-0, Matt Fraser tied the game at the 8:39 mark of the first period with his 12th goal of the season. The marker was assisted by Jonah Kaiser and Jake Kessler.
However, Nelson would find the back of the net again to lead 2-1 after the first.
Just like the first period, the second period featured a Chiefs goal sandwiched by two Leafs goals. After Nelson took a 3-1 lead, Owen Miller found the back of the net for the 15th time this season, assisted by Fraser and Sam Del Cin. But again, Nelson added a powerplay goal late in the period to double their lead.
In the third period, the Chiefs got within one twice more but it wasn't enough.
Aiden Petherick scored his third of the season, from Kaiden Sydenham and Jonah Kaiser 2:05 into the frame.
Nelson's Devon Barclay scored three minutes later to make it 5-3.
Late in the contest, Aiden Morcom added a powerplay goal for the Chiefs to once again make it a one-goal game, assisted by Fraser and Owen Ivanov.
The Leafs added an empty-net goal with five seconds left.
Michael Makowsky suffered the loss for 麻豆精选.
Saturday night went better for the Chiefs as they beat the Castlegar Rebels 6-1, getting goals from six different goal-scorers.
In the first period, 麻豆精选 got goals from Jack Libin, Fraser, and Ethan King's first of the season. In the following frame, Petherick and Spencer Fowle added markers to make it 5-0. Steve Andrusiak added a goal in the third period. Late in the game, Castlegar's Aiden Hicks scored to break the shutout.
Makowsky was outstanding in net, making 36 saves in the win.
With the split, the Chiefs are now 15-18-1-3 on the season, sitting fifth in the KIJHL's Bill Ohlhausen Division.
