KIJHL: Grand Forks, Revelstoke win away from final

Border Bruins, Grizzlies take 3-1 series leads into games Friday, April 4

There could be a large party in Grand Forks Friday night.

The town's hockey team is one win away from advancing to the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League's Teck Cup championship series for the first time in more than a half-century.

The Grand Forks Border Bruins entertain the Kimberley Dynamiters in Game 5 of their Kootenay Conference Championship Friday night, April 4, at the Jack Goddard Memorial Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.

Grand Forks' one and only appearance in the KIJHL final came in 1974, when they lost to the Cranbrook Colts.

The Bs took a 3-1 series lead Wednesday in Kimberley with a 3-2 come-from-behind overtime victory.

Levi Astill, from Edmonton, scored the winner 91 seconds after the ice clean for Grand Forks, with assists going to Tyler Burke of Vernon and hometown kid Alex Edwards.

Former Summerland Steam forward Tristan Weill of West Â鶹¾«Ñ¡ opened the scoring late in the first period for the Dynamiters, and Â鶹¾«Ñ¡'s Remy Spooner upped the lead to 2-0 in the middle frame.

Cue the Border Bruins comeback in the final 20 minutes.

Burke scored his eighth goal of the post-season on a powerplay at 2:36, and Nathan Flanagan tied the game at 8:12 with his first of the playoffs. Carter Price set up both goals for the Border Bruins.

Eric Kahl made 43 saves in goal for Grand Forks while Josh Hager made 34 saves for the Nitros, who won the Teck Cup in 2023, defeating the Princeton Posse.

The Dynamiters won Game 3 at home Tuesday, April 1, 4-3, with Luke Davies scoring the winner at 17:29 of the final period.

Weill had two goals for Kimberley, both set up by Spooner. 

Hunter Paterson scored twice for Grand Forks.

• The Okanagan Conference Championship series resumes in Revelstoke Friday, with the defending Teck Cup champion Grizzlies looking to advance to their fifth league championship series since 2019, as they take a 3-1 series lead over the 100 Mile House Wranglers into Game 5 at the Revelstoke Forum at  7 p.m.

The Grizzlies swept Games 3 and 4 in 100 Mile House Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, by scores of 5-3 and 8-3, respectively.

Landen Janz of Lake Country had a goal in Game 3 for the Wranglers, while Nelson Webster from Lake Country had an assist in each game.
