Five weeks after their first practice, the Pen High Lakers field lacrosse team will play their first-ever game.

Coached by Tony Ramsay, the Lakers will be in Victoria this weekend for the Claremont Secondary Spartans 12th annual Spartan Shootout.

鈥淚鈥檓 quite excited to see what they can do on the field,鈥 said Ramsay, who is guiding a combined team of juniors and seniors.

Along with being great kids, Ramsay said they have heart and desire to learn.

In the Spartan Shootout, the Lakers will face Ecole Mission Secondary, Vancouver College, Belville High from Washington and Nanaimo District Secondary.

Ramsay isn鈥檛 concerned about wins, he just wants his players to put in the effort.

鈥淚 think we have some pretty skilled players,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 think they should do OK.鈥

Ramsay wants to see his players work hard and have fun. In the time he has been coaching them, he loves seeing the 鈥済leam in their eyes.鈥

鈥淭hey are excited to play.鈥

鈥淚鈥檓 super excited,鈥 said Laker Kale Lawrence, who added practices have been intense. 鈥淲e are all super pumped. It鈥檚 going to be really fun. Right now I think we look pretty good. Better than I thought we would be. I think we鈥檙e going to do pretty good down there.鈥
