Okanagan curlers begin Canadian title chase

Three Okanagan teams start play Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Canadian U18 championships in Saskatoon

A trio of Okanagan teams sweep into the Prairies for the start of the Canadian U18 Curling Championships.

The event begins Sunday, Feb. 17, at the famed Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon.

Two Okanagan women's squads, and one Okanagan men's team, are among the rinks looking to win national titles at Nutana. There are 42 rinks taking part – 21 in each draw.

The B.C. U18 women's champions from Vernon-Kamloops play in the tournament's opening draw. Skip Ava Arndt and second Ivy Jensen of Vernon, along with the Evans sisters from Kamloops – third Bethany and lead Alicia – will take on Saskatchewan2 from Saskatoon at 6:30 a.m. B.C. time.

Dave Arndt is the coach of the B.C. team, which will also play at 2:30 p.m. Sunday against Alberta2.

There are three pools of seven in both the women's and men's tournaments.

The B.C. champs are in a pool with Quebec1, Ontario2, Northern Ontario1, and Prince Edward Island1. 

BC2 is a team from Â鶹¾«Ñ¡-Penticton, coached by Wendy Cseke, consisting of skip Megan Rempel, third Parker Rempel, second Gwyneth Jones, and Ella Walker at lead. BC2 plays its first game Sunday at 6:30 p.m. against Nunavut1.

The Rempel squad is in a pool with Northwest Territories1, Newfoundland/Labrador1, Nova Scotia1, Ontario1, and Manitoba1.

The B.C. champion men's team from Â鶹¾«Ñ¡ is skipped by Owen Jaeger. He's joined by third Spencer Rempel, second Noah Wielgosz, and lead Brendan Hruschak. The squad is coached by Tyler Jaeger.

B.C. plays its first game Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against Manitoba1. The Jaeger quartet is in a pool with Quebec2, Alberta2, PEI1, Newfoundland/Labrador1, and Nunavut1.

The Rempel team will complete round-robin play Wednesday, Feb. 19, while the Arndt and Jaeger squads complete their preliminary rounds Thursday, Feb. 20.

The finals are slated for Saturday, Feb. 22.
