BCHL representation at the 2024 World Juniors could come in the form of a Penticton Vees forward.
Simon Meier is currently attending Switzerland’s U20 Selection Camp for the IIHF World Juniors Hockey Championships, set for Gothenburg, Sweden, from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5.
The Vees’ rookie is one of 28 Swiss nationals to make the team’s preliminary roster, as selected by head coach Marcel Jenni.
Final cuts have yet to be made, as the team gears up for its four pre-tournament games from Dec. 14 to 22.
Only Sweden and Canada have submitted their final tournament rosters, as of Dec. 14. The latter captured gold in 2023.
Meier, 18, has 23 points in as many games with Penticton this season. The Bülach, Switzerland product has been away from the Vees since last week, as he looks to claim his spot on the nation’s final U20 roster.
The forward is looking to become the first member of the defending BCHL champions to play in the World Juniors since Stefano Bottini did so for Switzerland in December 2020.
It is unknown when the team will announce its final roster.
Switerzland starts the tournament on Dec. 27, against Slovakia.
