The host Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs scored the first four goals and went on to harvest a 10-2 win over the Wheatfield Braves from Strathmore, Alta., in the opening game of the 52nd Annual Vernon Winter Carnival Coca Cola Classic Pee Wee Hockey Tournament Thursday morning, Feb. 13, at Kal Tire Place North.
Kingston Prenioslo opened the scoring and finished the game with three goals for the Mustangs. Jett Menzies and Colby Boltz each added a pair, while single markers went to Rowan McGrath, Hunter Smithson (powerplay), and Jackson Marchischuk. Nixon Spencer collected three assists while Jake McNab picked up the win in goal for the Mustangs.
Mohammad Dean Rafih scored both goals for the Braves, who started Mark Gavrilovs in net.
The Mustangs led 3-0 after 20 minutes, and 9-1 after two periods.
Vernon returns to the ice at 5:45 p.m. Thursday to face the California Goldrush from Lake Forest in Orange County in their second game.
The tournament's opening ceremonies take place at 5:30 p.m.
Eight teams are competing; each team will play five games.
