The Okanagan College Coyotes will not be bringing home a second consecutive Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC) championship.
The Coyotes got off to a great start to the double-elimination tournament in Lethbridge, AB with an 8-1 win against the University of Fraser Valley on Thursday, May 17. .
The team enjoyed a day-off on Friday and were rested going into Saturday morning, where a win against the Victoria Collegiate Golden Tide would advance them to the semi-finals. But in a back-and-forth game, they fell to Victoria 9-7.
After holding a 2.25 ERA in the regular season, Sean Dunn allowed six earned runs on 10 hits for the loss against Victoria.
With the loss, because of the tournament format, the Coyotes had to play again later that day to keep their hopes of a second consecutive championship alive.
And they did exactly that, keeping their season going by beating Edmonton 4-2 on Saturday night. The most important aspect of a tournament like the CCBC championships is pitching and Corey Lawson kept his bullpen fresh for Sunday, throwing a complete game against Edmonton, allowing just two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out 11 batters.
The Coyotes season was kept alive until Sunday but that鈥檚 when they ran out of gas. They were eliminated from the tournament after losing to the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs 12-4.
After going into the playoffs with the best defence in the league, the Coyotes made 12 errors in their four tournament games. They gave up 34 runs in the four games with nine of the runs being unearned.
The CCBC season concludes on Monday with Victoria taking on the University of Calgary Dinos for the championship.
