The University of B.C. Okanagan Heat women's volleyball team set a new program record for their stellar serving and defeated the Regina Cougars in three straight sets on Feb. 7.
Comfortable on their home turf, the Â鶹¾«Ñ¡-based Heat bested the Cougars with a three set score of 25-17, 25-11, 25-21. On their quest to victory, the Heat players set a new program record of 18 aces in three set match.
An ace in volleyball is a serve which lands in the opponent's court without being returned over the net.
Graduating senior Amaya Perry led the Heat with six aces across the three sets. Her standout performance set a new all-time Heat record for cumulative career serving aces with 166 un-returnable serves during her time as a UBCO athlete. She is also now slated in second place on the Canada West all-time leader-board, behind the record of 175 held by Alberta's Kacey Otto.
Perry also extended her lead atop the Heat's all-time kills and points list with nine kills and 16 points in the match. She now has 899 kills and 1,133.5 points.
Outside hitter Olivia Tymkiw also set a new career best from the service line putting up four of her team's 18 aces and Olivia Boulding was an offensive machine with 11 kills.
The win pulls UBCO back into a playoff position as they sit in a three-way tie with Trinity Western University in Langley and the University of Calgary for ninth in the Canada West standings, with two games remaining in the season.
The team will take to the road for the weekend of Feb.14, to face the Winnipeg Wesmen for a pair of games in their final weekend of the 2024-25 season.
