A Vernon graduate of W.L. Seaton Secondary played an instrumental role in helping her Simon Fraser University Red Leafs win their conference championship for the first time ever.

Kaiden Sherwood, who is a sophomore wing for the Red Leafs, provided a crucial assist in the final of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference playoff championship game.

In the 81st minute of a 1-1 tie between SFU and the reigning conference, and NCAA Division II champion Western Washington Vikings, Sherwood streaked down the wing into open space before slicing a beautiful ball to sophomore forward Reagan MacKenzie. MacKenzie took two cracks at net, finally getting the second shot into the back of the goal to put the Red Leafs up for good.

The win claimed SFU鈥檚 first ever GNAC women鈥檚 soccer title. Heading into the four-team playoff, the Red Leafs had never won a playoff game, yet that all changed after first dispatching top seeded Seattle Pacific in the semifinals, 4-2.

麻豆精选鈥檚 Kate Cartier, who started 16 games in the season for the Red Leafs, scored the second goal in the semis. Sherwood also chipped in with an assist in the resounding victory.

The finals win secures SFU鈥檚 place in the NCAA Division II Championship, which will begin on Thursday, Nov. 16.

SFU has been a part of the NCAA Division II since 2010. This will be their first appearance in the tournament.

In her career with the Red Leafs, Sherwood has four goals, three assists in 33 games played.
