Three medals on opening day and she's just getting started.
Vernon's Alexanne Lepage won a pair of gold medals along with a silver with her University of Calgary Dinos teammates in a relay as the Canadian U-Sports Swimming Championships got underway Thursday, March 6, at Varsity Pool at the University of Toronto.
The Dinos sit in second place in the women's standings heading into competition Friday. Competition wraps up Saturday.
"I think we had a decent night," said Calgary head coach Mike Blondal to the Dinos' athletic department Thursday night. "We missed a few races this morning, but finished the day much stronger with a number of great swims, lifetime bests and gold medal performances from Alexanne and Nicholas Duncan. We had a great Day 1 and I am looking forward to two more fun days of racing ahead."
Lepage, a Vernon Kokanee Swim Club alumnus, took the 100-metre breaststroke, leading from start to finish, ending with a time of 1 minute 5.79 seconds. She capped off the Dinos' big day by taking the gruelling women's 400m Individual Medley, gaining control of the race after the breaststroke leg to finish in 4:42 17.
Day 1 closed out with the 400m freestyle relay with the women's squad of Lepage, Hannah Bennett, Eliza Housman, and Hannah Johnsen bringing home the silver medal in 3:44.54.
Two other Kokanee grads are competing in Toronto. Kelsey Fillion swims for the University of Manitoba, and Ryan Murphy is a member of the Victoria Vikes' men's team.
