Landslide on Westside Road near former homeless encampment prompts search effort

The Reid Creek area was the home to a former homeless encampment

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) was called out to the Westside Road landslide on Wednesday, April 2, after learning of a former encampment for those experiencing homelessness in the same area as the slide.

The slide happened in the Reid Creek area and was first reported Tuesday night at about 10:45 p.m.

According to a COSAR social media post, volunteers searched through the mud and debris for six hours before confirming there were no individuals lost or stuck in the slide.

Westside Road North between Main Street and Denison Road remains closed in both directions. The Central Okanagan Emergency Operations has been activated.

The area of the slide was significantly impacted by the 2023 McDougall Creek Wildfire. Properties located in the post-wildfire areas are subject to a higher risk of potential debris flow runout and upstream diversion.
