Vernon basketball player howls commitment to Kamloops' Wolfpack

Paige Leahy signed with the TRU Wolfpack in Kamloops to continue playing basketball at the post-secondary level.

Paige Leahy was a key piece in the VSS Panthers provincial tournament, helping them to a bronze medal.

Both apex predators, the panther and wolf are known to stalk their prey relentlessly before eventually devouring them.

On the basketball court, Paige Leahy seems to apply those attributes, as she is relentless herself in the hounding of opponents.

It's fitting that the Grade 12 forward is trading her Vernon Secondary School Panthers white and red for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack orange and black after officially signing with the U Sports program on Tuesday, April 1.

"I chose the WolfPack because I felt it was the perfect fit for me as there's a sense of family and unity here," said Leahy. "The team and coaches were very inviting and had great energy, it's clear that everyone is committed to supporting each other. "

With the Panthers this season, the five-foot-nine guard helped lead her team to a third-place showing at the B.C. Provincial AAA Championships.

In four games at the tournament, Leahy scored 58 total points, including a game-high 25 in the bronze medal match, where VSS won 68-57 over the Duchess Park Condors. She was also named a second-team all-star.

Panthers head coach Dave Tetrault leaned on Leahy throughout the season for her defensive ability.

"As the season progressed, Paige was given the job of stopping the opponent's best player," said Tetrault. "She frustrated and controlled some of the best players in the province and at the same time, she was able to consistently score both at the rim and from the three-point line."

Tetrault called Leahy an "unstoppable" force in the playoffs, believing her effectiveness can be gleaned at the post-secondary level.

"I look forward to seeing her continue to grow as a player and young lady," added Tetrault. "She will be missed by her teammates and coaches and we wish her well as she moves to TRU. “

Twice a female athlete of the year at VSS, Leahy is looking forward to playing close to home.

"I like that I am still close enough to home where my family and friends can continue to watch my basketball career grow," she said. "I feel I am a hardworking and determined player, and I look forward to playing at the U SPORTS level."

The WolfPack last year suffered through a tough 1-19 season, and let go of their coach, Todd Warnick midway through the year. Scott Clark took over as interim coach, but it is so far unknown who will be coaching for the 2025-26 season.
