It could be several years before 麻豆精选 residents on the waiting list for traffic calming measures in their neighbourhood see any action.
At Monday鈥檚 (Feb. 10) meeting, council heard that there are nearly 300 streets on the list and, due to budget constraints, only five to six streets can be done per year.
鈥淎s you can imagine, with 270 streets on our list, it may take a while to get through them all,鈥 said Alex Wood-Seems, city traffic technician.
Staff told the council they respond to service requests as soon as possible, collect traffic data to get the neighbourhood on the list, then report back to residents. It can be up to a six-month process. Approximately one-third of the streets on the list have traffic volumes or speeds that exceed allowed limits. Neighbourhoods with very high speeds or volumes could be moved to the top of the list.
The budget for traffic calming is typically $180,000. However, for 2025, staff requested and received $500,000.
鈥淚 think what council needs to do, and what I鈥檓 hearing, is we鈥檙e going to have to have a bit of a debate about resources and how much we want to support this,鈥 said Deputy Mayor Luke Stack.
He told staff it would be helpful if the council were made aware of priority neighbourhoods to assess what resources could be contributed to the project.
