Residents in Peachland and the surrounding area may notice smoke from a prescribed burn in March.
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), Penticton Indian Band (PIB), and Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen will conduct a 25-hectare burn approximately four kilometres southwest of Peachland in the Meadow Valley area.
It is part of a larger project consisting of 40 hectares.
The project reduces fine fuels and the build up of dead grass, supports ecosystem restoration, improves community protection through fuel load reduction, and reduces fire hazards.
Ignitions will only proceed if conditions are suitable, and venting conditions allow for quick smoke dissipation.
The burn will be controlled and monitored, and provide cross-training opportunities for the Peachland Fire Department, PIB, and BCWS.
