A two-vehicle collision on Highway 97A resulted in three adults being taken to hospital during the heavy snowfall Friday afternoon.
At 1:30 on Jan. 31, the Sicamous RCMP responded to a crash on Highway 97A near Mara Provincial Park where an off-duty officer heading south noticed a northbound Nissan SUV start to skid on a curve in the road. Unable to regain traction, the vehicle crossed the double solid line into the path of a southbound Mitsubishi SUV the off-duty officer had been behind.
The impact pushed the Mitsubishi off the road and down a steep embankment where it landed on its roof.
"The highway was wet with slushy conditions at the time of the collision," Sgt. Murray McNeil said in a media release. "A significant amount of snow had fallen throughout the day, however, highway crews had been out maintaining the roadways."
BC Ambulance, Enderby Fire Rescue, and the Swansea Point Fire Department also responded to provide assistance to the injured occupants, with three adults taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
"A dog who had been travelling with the two occupants of the Mitsubishi was uninjured in the collision," McNeil added.
Highway 97A was closed for about an hour while crews cleared the one vehicle and debris from the road, but opened to single lane alternating traffic while the other SUV was removed from the ditch. Highway 1, however, was open for the day as no work was being done on the Bruhn Bridge at that time.
