As the BC SPCA enters one of its slowest months for pet adoptions, it has hundreds of animals currently in need of a forever home.
As of Feb. 4, the organization reported close to 300 critters, from dogs and cats to guinea pigs and rabbits, were available for adoption. That number was expected to increase in the coming weeks. There are many other animals in care at the SPCA that are waiting for medical procedures, are in protective custody or not yet old enough to adopted that will soon be included in the total looking for homes.
"We see a substantial slow-down in adoption in February," senior director of community animal centres Adrienne McBride said in a media release. "We don't see as many people looking for pets to add to their families as we do the rest of the year."
She added that the SPCA is also getting ready for "kitten season," which will start as the weather gets warmer and outdoor cats start to breed. That will result in more litters of kittens going into their care so "we need to find homes for the animals currently available to make room for them."
As an added incentive to adopt, anyone who provides a forever home for an animal between Feb. 6 and 28 will get a 25 per cent discount at the BC SPCA Online Store.
