The intersection of Pleasant Valley Road and Silver Star Road in Vernon is going under the microscope.
Councillor Teresa Durning cited an "avalanche" of requests from Vernon residents regarding pedestrian and vehicular safety on the 48th Avenue intersection at the Monday, Jan. 27 council meeting.
"There are vehicles backing up to get into Butcher Boys," said Durning. "I think it is a danger zone, and someone should take a look at what is going on."
Vehicle congestion and speeding was the main feedback from Vernon residents regarding the area.
Chief Administrative Officer for the city, Peter Weeber commented on a recent incident on Saturday night involving an individual struck by a vehicle at the intersection while using the crosswalk.
"Just on Saturday, there was an incident where someone was hit on the crosswalk and is in hospital," Weeber said. "We can provide an administrative update on what has been done there and what we can do."
Durning also mentioned that two traffic zone signs were put up recently in the area, but she is skeptical about the impact it has had.
Council will provide an update on the safety of the intersection, including the use of the traffic zone signs, at the next council meeting (Monday, Feb. 10).
The area is expected to get even busier with the growth of the Silver Star Gateway development as additional businesses move into the complex.
