The North Okanagan Hospice Society is looking for people willing to help create a 'wind phone,' a place for people to connect with the loved ones they've lost.

The North Okanagan Hospice Society is putting a call-out for handy folks to help create a space for people to feel closer to their loved ones who have died.

The society is on a mission to create a "wind phone" — a "serene spot where people can phone loved ones they've lost, finding comfort and connection," it posted on Facebook Friday.

A wind phone is an unconnected telephone booth, typically located in a natural setting. The concept originated in Japan about 15 years ago and allows people to pick up the phone and express thoughts and feelings about people who have passed on, as though they were on the line with them. The society said the concept has "brought solace to many worldwide."

But the hospice needs help.

The society is looking for a skilled and creative person to build the booth or cabinet for the wind phone.

"Whether you're a carpenter, woodworker, or a DIY enthusiast, your talents can help us craft a peaceful sanctuary for remembrance," the society said.

Anyone interested in helping out with the project is invited to reach out to the hospice society by calling 250-503-1800 or emailing info@nohs.ca

"Together, we can create a space of healing and connection for our community."
