Lumby residents pay $16 to swim at Vernon pool

LETTER: 'Recreation centres and pools have been affordable recreation for low-income families as well as everybody else since their fruition'

Going for a dip at the Vernon Aquatics Centre could cost you $16, depending on where you live.(City of Vernon photo)

I'm a Lumby resident and have been for over 20 years.

I used to attend the pool three to four times a week when my kids were young. So needless to say it's been a while.

Recently, I invited a friend to join me, and off to Vernon Rec Centre we went.

Upon arrival we were asked where we were from and we both answered Lumby.

We were then shown that the admission was $16 per person.

This is the highest price I have ever seen to go into a pool for a few hours.

I questioned why it was so expensive and the answer was that we were not Vernon residents.

Like any business, the rec centre needs to generate a profit through marketing and availability to the public.

Businesses don't grow without this taking place.

The city of Vernon in their infinite wisdom has yet again shot themselves in the foot.

I asked around by community only to find people don't bother going to the Vernon Rec Centre largely because of this reason.

Recreation centres and pools have been affordable recreation for low-income families as well as everybody else since their fruition.

In today's financial climate this pricing is kind of outrageous in my opinion.

I would love to see a response to my letter from Vernon city hall.

Thank you for reading, much appreciated.
