The group will work with B.C Hockey League officials, either attending games or watching video, to help them reach their development potential.
Heyer, from Summerland, spent 30 years as an official in the National Hockey League from 1988 to 2018. He worked more than 2,000 games as a referee and line official, as well as 214 playoff games, including six Stanley Cup finals.
He was inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019 and is now employed by the NHL as an officiating manager.
鈥淚鈥檓 a proud graduate of the BC Hockey League,鈥 said Heyer. 鈥淚 worked there from 1982 to 1988. It鈥檚 always exciting when I see other officials come out of the BCHL and advance in the game. I鈥檓 honoured to be able to help out young officials in B.C. in any way I can.鈥
Others to sign on with the program are Kelly Sutherland, Jay Sharrers and Steve Piotrowski.
Sutherland has been an NHL official since 2000 and has refereed in 10 Stanley Cup finals and numerous international events.
Sharrers became the NHL鈥檚 first Black official when he joined the league as a line official in 1990. He has officiated more than 1,600 regular season games and more than 200 post-season games including seven Stanley Cup finals.
Piotrowski has officiated in the NCAA鈥檚 Central Collegiate Hockey Association for 26 years.
