When entering Creston, many drivers have probably noticed the uplifting messages on the fence of Wloka Farms.
Over the years, the fruit stand in Erickson has become more than just a stop for fresh produce - it’s a true community staple.
Since 2012, messages written with threaded flagging tape have adorned the fence just off Highway 3 at the corner of 36 Ave. Affectionately known as Fence Notes, the project began as a fun idea by owner Barb Wloka.
Initially, she simply wanted to give the drivers going by something to think about or to lift their spirits.
A year later, the first paid message was requested in 2013. Since then, the notes have included seasonal greetings, birthdays, anniversaries, baby announcements, and congratulations for graduation and retirement.
"People have joked that you're not a true part of Creston until your name goes up on the fence," Wloka laughed. "My husband has bugged me about all the time and effort that goes into putting up these notes, but it's a lot of fun."
She has many fond memories of community connection from these messages – from the birthdays celebrating 100 years to a very unique marriage proposal.
"The proposal was the first and only time I've used both sections of the fence," said Wloka. "I had to add that she said yes."
She recalled a mother’s story about how the fence delivered the right message at the perfect moment. When her daughter saw the words "Follow your dreams" written on the tape, it struck a chord and gave her the courage to leave a bad relationship and pursue higher education out of town.
Fence Notes have become all the more meaningful as the proceeds go towards supporting Wloka's favourite cause – Creston Valley Society for Therapeutic Horsemanship. Wloka, who has spent her life working with horses, has volunteered there for the last 15 years.
"It's an amazing program. I love how inclusive it is, and there are so many ways to get involved and volunteer," said Wloka.
Over the last 10 years, Fence Notes have raised nearly $11,000, which is currently sponsoring the care of Beau the horse.
To order a custom Fence Note, email Barb Wloka at bwloka@hotmail.com to ensure the correct details and spelling. Please book at least one week in advance of the desired date. The notes cost $30 for the first day, and $5 for each additional day. Wloka Farms Fruit Stand gladly accepts flagging tape in bright colours for the continuation of this project.
