Sutherland Avenue from Ethel Street to Gordon Drive to set to close for a few months starting on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

The stretch of road will be closed from Feb. 28 through to summer for the latest phase of the Sutherland Active Transportation Corridor (ATC).

Construction will be taking place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday but some work might occur outside those hours, later at night and on weekends. This is to minimize impacts on residents and limit the time of active construction in the area.

Drivers are advised to take alternate routes but the street will still be accessible to residents on the road as well as emergency vehicles.

鈥淭his construction is part of a larger project to extend the Sutherland Active Transportation Corridor from Ethel Street to Burtch Road,鈥 said the City of 麻豆精选 in a release. 鈥淚n addition to 1.2 kilometers of new bi-directional cycle track, the project will add LED streetlights, intersection improvements, new crosswalks throughout the corridor, and utility upgrades.鈥

鈥淐rews began construction on the section between Burtch Road and Chandler Street in 2023 and will now start work on the Ethel Street to Gordon Drive section,鈥 the City adds. 鈥淭he construction schedule has been timed to coordinate with a neighbouring utility project to minimize disruption to residents. Crews will shift east as the work is completed to focus on the Gordon Drive to Capri Street, and Capri Street to Chandler Street sections in summer 2024.鈥

The $3.5-million active transportation corridor project is funded in part by the Canada Community Building Fund. When concluded, it will complete the East-West bike network, which will improve accessibility, safety, and convenience for cyclists and pedestrians.
