An Enderby cadet corps volunteer has been recognized for years of dedication to Canada with a prestigious honour.
Andrea Newton was presented with the King Charles III Coronation Medal by the B.C. branch of the Army Cadet League of Canada (ACLC) in January.
In 2023, to mark the coronation of King Charles III, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the government's intention to award Canadians who have made a significant contribution to the country. That award is the King Charles III medal.
The award is a testament to Newton's "outstanding service and dedication," said Elisabeth Mortlock, ACLC B.C. branch executive director.
Newton's extensive service with the ACLC B.C. branch began in 2017, when she became a branch representative for the support committee of the 3063 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in Enderby. She attended corps activities and meetings, and showed a commitment to the corps' volunteers.
Newton began to serve as a director with the executive board of the B.C. branch in 2021 and volunteered for the treasurer position in 2023. She has provided countless hours with the former treasurer, learning the position's objectives.
In addition to her involvement with the B.C. branch, Newton has volunteered with various organizations since 2017, including Victim Services with the North Okanagan RCMP detachment, the Office of the Veterans Ombudsman, the Justice Institute of BC, and the Care and Support Advisory Group with Veterans Affairs Canada. She is the director and founder of the Veterans Boots of Hope Society and is the director and treasurer of the Care4Paws Society.
"Andrea鈥檚 unwavering dedication to the Army Cadet Program has left a significant impact. Her embodiment of the ACLC's mission, vision, and aim, along with her positive influence on the community and volunteers within the B.C. Branch, is truly inspiring. Her skills, knowledge, and willingness to help others have made her a deserving recipient of the King鈥檚 Charles III Coronation Medal," said Mortlock.
The ACLC B.C. branch is a non-profit organization committed to supporting army cadets, working in partnership with the Department of National Defence and local communities.
